With great vegetation, it is a feeding destination for a variety of species, including the Green Kingfisher. Watch as this great bird darts across the river in search of fish. Various herons and egrets can also be spotted along the Frio River, ensuring a diverse and entertaining scenery.

Lost Maples State Natural Area

Located 45-minutes outside of Concan is the community of Vanderpool. Dense wooded areas along with open meadows and streams provide a great resting point for birds of all kinds. The Golden-cheeked Warbler can be spotted throughout the surrounding area. Additionally, the Black-capped Vireo nests in the dense thickets surrounding the park.

  • Frio Canyon Trail: This 3.3 mile hike can be used by both hikers and mountain bikers and offers birding views unlike any other. It takes on average over an hour to complete, so plan accordingly. Dogs are welcomed on this trail, so bring your furry friend with you!
  • Bridges Trail to Bird Trail Loop: Steep and challenging, this trail offers a cave view at the halfway point, ensuring some unique birding opportunities! It averages closer to an hour to complete based on the steepness of the hike. Prepare ahead of time with proper shoes and ensure your party can all make the steep climb.
  • Garner State Park Nature Trail: This short half-mile hike is a perfect hike for all ages. Within these forested areas, you can spot local songbirds, and even turkeys. Take your group within the unique flora as you spot the various critters and scenery!

Concan Golf Course

As you play a game of golf, or casually observe your party, watch out for Little Blue Herons. These birds, along with Northern Bobwhites, can be spotted throughout the sporting area.
