Garner State Park: Fun for the Whole Family

There is a mountain in the background and a lake in the foreground.

In the heart of the Texas hill country you’ll find Garner State Park, a favorite summertime getaway for locals and visitors alike. Many have become so fond of the area that they make the trip every summer, while thousands of newcomers enjoy the park’s natural beauty and tranquility each year.

Whether you’re a Texas native who’s well-versed in the hill country or a first-time visitor wondering where to start, we’ll help you discover some of the best things to do in Garner State Park during your next visit.

Natural beauty

The local wildlife and beautiful scenery at Garner State Park are especially captivating during the summer months, like the Frio River that snakes its way along the green hills and the beautiful limestone cliffs. Here are some of the natural wonders you can see on your visit to the park:

Frio River

The Frio River is the beating heart of Garner State Park. The river’s shallow waters and cool temperatures have created a haven for all kinds of local fauna and flora despite the summer heat, and there are plenty of places to picnic right along the water’s edge.

The river carves its way along the hills at a leisurely pace, making it perfect for floating along on a tube or raft while you soak up the summer sun. If being on the water isn’t your cup of tea, the river is also a favorite among local fishermen for bass, sunfish, and occasionally rainbow trout.

Limestone Cliffs

The majestic limestone cliffs that surround the area are an iconic part of the park’s identity. These are great areas for hiking that offer scenic lookout points over the hills and forests. Camping in the shade of one of these outcroppings is also a great way to stay cool and out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day.

Oak and Cypress Forests

Possibly the number one reason people like to spend their vacation at Garner State Park, the lush greenery of the area is enchanting and peaceful. Large oak trees dominate the forests and cast plenty of shade, while bald cypress trees guard the riverbanks. You’ll also find the unique Texas Madrone, a large evergreen that stands tall above its neighbors.

Wildflowers, Fall Colors

The thousands of colorful wildflowers that take root in spring are on full display during the summer months at Garner State Park. Nearly every color is on display, from bluebonnets to orange Indian Paintbrush, to pink Evening Primrose. And if you happen to come during the end of summer, the Cypress trees along the riverbanks are one of the first to change color, making a trail of flaming orange that follows the river through the valley.

Recreational activities

The natural beauty of Garner State Park is complemented by all sorts of local attractions and park-hosted activities. From working up a sweat on one of the many local hiking trails to unwinding with some evening music and dancing, there’s plenty to do for every member of the family.

Hiking

Hiking is probably the best way to take in the natural beauty of Garner State Park, and outdoor enthusiasts are spoiled for choice with more than 16 miles of exploreable trails. Be sure to pack well and bring protection from the sun, as some of the trails take you out from under the trees and onto scenic lookout points.

Swimming, Tubing, Kayaking

Swimming is how many people spend their days at the park, with easy access to the Frio River and mile after mile of shallow water that’s perfect for the whole family to splash around in. There are also many places to rent tubes and paddle boards near the water, and you can even secure yourself a kayak if you’re feeling adventurous.

Wildlife viewing

Garner State Park has long been known for its abundant wildlife, and if you’re lucky you’ll see more than just a few of the species that make their home here. Here are some of the many different creatures you’ll come across while staying at Garner:

Aside from camping and swimming, the park hosts special events and activities during the summer, including nature walks, stargazing, and ranger programs.

The Dance

An all-time favorite activity at Garner State Park is The Dance. Held every single night during the summer months, The Dance is an excellent way for each member of the family to move to their favorite music. You can request songs, learn moves together as a group, or slow things down with a partner as the night moves on.

Historic landmarks

Garner State Park is nearly a century old and is full of history. While exploring the park you’re likely to come across remnants from the park’s past, such as old stone bridges, cabins, and original picnic areas.

CCC Pavilion

The park was primarily constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1935 and 1941, and one of their most impressive accomplishments is the central pavilion. Still standing today, the classic stone structure was renamed the CCC Pavilion and serves as the main location for many of the park’s events throughout the year, including the dance.

Enjoyed by Generations

Grandparents enjoy showing their grandkids the same sights and secrets they discovered when they were children, and the protective measures taken by the park ensure these pieces of history will last for many generations to come.
