Unlocking The Lost Maples State Natural Area:

A Hidden Gem

The Lost Maples State Natural Area can be found in Vanderpool, Texas, and is a park that provides family-friendly activities year round. Whether it is hiking, fishing, birdwatching, or looking for a geocache, the possibilities are endless. The trees alone are worth seeing, especially during the fall season when they change colors, showing vibrant hues of yellow, orange, and red.

Stunning Landscape

As mentioned above, the Lost Maples State Natural Area is renowned for its fall foliage, with reds and golds of the maple trees dotting the landscape. However, the park’s beauty is year-round, making it a must-see treasure. From spring wildflowers to summer greeneries, each season packs a punch in this enchanting area.

Over 2,000 acres of land, including steep hills, scenic canyons, and clear flowing streams encompass the state park. Over ten miles of trails present themselves for your hiking pleasure, regardless of physical levels. There are challenging hikes as well as leisurely strolls, guaranteeing that you will find something for you and your loved ones to venture out on.

Hiking Trails

One of the main highlights are the trails that you can walk on. The Maple Trail is a popular, short hike that presents large bigtooth maple trees. For a more challenging hike, we recommend the 3.6 mile West Trail, where you can challenge yourself with the steep hike. Overall, there are several trails to choose from, ranging from short twenty minute hikes to all-day, strenuous activities. Pick your favorite according to your abilities, and experience an unforgettable journey.

Additional points of interest would be Monkey Rock, a limestone outcrop that can be spotted along your journey through the park. Head over to the Scenic Overlook or the Grotto for a peaceful, wondrous view. Just don’t forget to bring your camera and snap a couple of pictures while you’re at it!

Watching the Wildlife

Lost Maples is not only a haven for hikers, but for animal watchers as well. Look out for deer, foxes, and a variety of birds. The diversity of the wildlife is sure to appeal to all, making it a prime spot for nature photography or wildlife observation. Ensure continual success for generations to come by keeping your distance and respecting the environment, following the Leave No Trace principles.
